Henson, going into his senior season at Michigan, was the returning starter at QB and led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record and a #11 national ranking last season. Many experts tagged him as the #1 overall pick to the expansion Houston Texans in the 2002 NFL Draft, and the leading candidate for the Heisman trophy in 2001.
Henson originally was drafted by the Yankees in 1998 and played in their minor league system, but was traded to Cincinnati last July as part of the trade that brought Denny Neagle to New York. Henson hit .266 with nine homers in 308 at-bats last season, mostly in Double-A. He struggled after the trade, hitting .172 in 16 games for the Reds' Double-A team in Chattanooga. He was traded back to the Yankees last week in a deal for other minor leaguers.
Lloyd Carr said in a statement, "We wish him well."
Third year sophomore John Navarre, is the incumbent starter now that Henson is leaving. Navarre completed 51.9 % of his passes last season for 581 yards, 8 TDs to only 1 INT, in only a few games work, and looked good throughout except for a poor second half at UCLA.
